The surviving archaeological evidence appears to suggest that mankind can exist, unassisted, on practically all those parts of the earth that are at present inhabited, except for the most arid and the most cold. The operative word is “exist”; a naked man armed only with hands, teeth, legs, and native cunning appears to be a viable organism everywhere on land, except in snowfields and deserts. But only just; in order to flourish, rather than merely survive, mankind needs more ease and leisure than a bare-fisted, and barebacked, single-handed struggle to exist could permit.
A large part of that ease and leisure comes from the deployment of technical resources and social organizations, in order to control the immediate environment : to produce dryness in rainstorms, heat in winter, chill in summer, to enjoy acoustic and visual privacy, to have convenient surfaces on which to arrange one’s belongings and sociable activities. For all but the last dozen decades or so, mankind has only disposed of one convincing method for achieving these environmental improvements; to erect massive and apparently permanent structures.
Partial solutions to these problems have always been offered by alternative methods such as wearing a coat in the rain; getting in a tent out of he sun, or gathering around a camp-fire in the cool of evening. But a coat is an unsociable solution, a tent is short on acoustic privacy even though it may be adequate to keep off prying eyes, and a camp fire, while it can provide heat and light enough to make a useful area and ground habitable, is short on all sorts of privacy and offers no protection against rain.
But, over and above considerations of this kind, one must observe a fundamental difference between environmental aids of the structural type (including clothes) and those of which the camp-fire is the archetype. Let the difference be expressed in a form of parable, in which a savage tribe (of the sort that exists only in parables) arrives at an evening camp-site and finds it well supplied with fallen timber. Two basic methods of exploiting the environmental potential of hat timber exist : either it may be used to construct a wind-break or rain-shed - the structural solution - or it may be used to build a fire - the power-operated solution. An ideal tribe of noble rationalists would consider the amount of wood available, make an estimate of the probable weather for he night - wet, windy, or cold - and dispose of its timber resources accordingly. A real tribe, being the inheritors of ancestral cultural predispositions would do nothing of the sort, of course, and would either make fire or build a shelter according to prescribed custom - and that, as will emerge from this study, is what Western, civilized nations still do, in most cases.

L'ATMOSPHERE DES CAFES PARISIENS

Depuis le XVIIe siècle, moment de l’apparition du café littéraire, l’histoire culturelle de Paris est inscrite dans les alcôves et comptoirs de ses estaminets. Lieux de vie et de dynamisme intellectuel, les cafés parisiens vibraient des ambiances bruyantes ou feutrées, atmosphères stimulantes et souvent enfumées générées par leurs usagers et peut-être aussi par une part impalpable, davantage inhérente au lieu.

Aujourd’hui, le bistrot parisien fait bien souvent pâle figure, engoncé dans des parures d’un autre siècle, singeant dans un décor pour touristes des époques où la bouillonnante atmosphère créative remplissait à elle seule l’endroit.

Lorsque nous avons été contactés par un célèbre propriétaire de bars et restaurants pour un projet à Bastille, notre idée a été d’explorer cette atmosphère si particulière et évanescente.

Pour ce faire, il s’agissait de se détacher au maximum de la chape de tentures, boiseries et dorures, si chère aux cafetiers et décorateurs, pour développer une réflexion sur les éléments tangibles et pourtant invisibles d’un tel lieu, les éléments discrets et chimiques qui constituent cet environnement, à la manière de Philippe Rahm qui questionne : "Est-ce que le climat pourrait constituer un nouveau langage architectural, celui dʼune architecture pensée comme météorologie? Pourrait-on imaginer que les phénomènes climatiques tels que la convection, la conduction, lʼévaporation par exemple, puissent devenir les nouveaux outils de la composition architecturale ? La vapeur, la chaleur ou la lumière pourraient-elles constituer les nouvelles briques de la construction contemporaine?"

Notre intervention porterait alors sur le contrôle et l’expression de ces corps atmosphériques, une façon contemporaine de revendiquer le climat comme enveloppe primordiale de l’usager. L’architecture se scinderait en deux : d’une part un aménagement conçu comme une machine structurante, une trame de fond régissant, d’autre part, les flux, phénomènes et particules invisibles.

Le lieu est donc pensé comme une véritable atmosphère, au sens littéral, dont l’équilibre est régit par les variations de pression, de flux, les propriétés chimiques de telle ou telle zone en tension avec la présence des usagers. L’espace du café a été séparé en cinq parties programmatiques distinctes, cinq situations ayant chacune une particularité atmosphérique propre.

A l’exception de quelques pièces, l’ensemble du lieu est compris entre deux grilles métalliques horizontales, définissant un plenum continu permettant une circulation d’air complète guidée par les mouvements convectifs. Amorçant son parcours dans une "chambre motrice", dont la polarisation d'une source chaude et d'une source froide crée un déséquilibre barométrique, le volume d'air va se répandre progressivement dans chacune des pièces du lieu, où ses propriétés seront modifiées.

1. Chambre à dynamique de flux
Dans cet espace clos, l'air est simplement mis en mouvement par le contraste thermique de deux bulles lumineuses, l'une rayonnant dans l'infrarouge, l'autre complètement froide. Ce lieu étrange donne à voir l'écart de longueur d'onde de rayonnement, créant une instabilité visuelle et spatiale stimulant l'usager. Bien que séparé de l'atmosphère spécifique de cette pièce, le volume d'air présent dans les plenums inférieur et supérieur est également irradié par les lampes adjacentes. Ces variations de température génèrent l'amorce nécessaire au déplacement de l'air, tel un cœur donnant l'impulsion primordiale au fluide vital.

2. Bar à échange thermique
La partie bar est le second espace inondé par l'air pulsé précédemment. Ce lieu d'échanges, de discussion, de désaltération, de danse ou d'enivrement est singulièrement marqué par la présence d'un élément fort qui en défini l'usage : le comptoir. Meuble purement fonctionnel, le comptoir est surtout dans un bar l'interface qui permet l'acquisition de boisson (fraîches en particulier), en cela nous le définissons comme un dispositif d'échange thermique. Sa forme est alors dictée par cette fonction à l'état pur : une interface thermique capable de capter la chaleur corporelle irradiée des consommateurs. Canalisée, cette énergie calorifique est alors recyclée en froid par l'intermédiaire d'une machine à absorption pour fabriquer la glace qui réfrigérera les prochains cocktails.
Plus qu'une répartition savante d'équipements variés, le système acoustique est ici pensé comme un réseau uniforme, un essaim visible et mouvant. La vibration de l'air est ici l'objet de l'attention, bien plus que la formalisation – standardisée – de l'appareil.

3. Restaurant à filtration d’air
Prendre un repas n'est jamais un acte anodin. Aussi un chef aime à créer un environnement sain pour apprécier ses plats. Si le décorum peut être chargé, l'environnement immédiat de la nourriture se doit d'être neutre et parfait : dans une analogie au White Cube de Brian O'Doherty dans l'art visuel, on pourrait chercher à créer un environnement sensible neutre et blanc pour chaque repas : assiettes et nappes blanches, lumière neutre, son neutre, air neutre. C'est particulièrement sur ce dernier point que nous travaillerons dans cet espace, la neutralisation et la purification de l'air entrant par un dispositif d'interstice filtrant.
A travers de grandes hélices, la façade sur rue inspire l'air extérieur pollué de la place de la Bastille. Dans un espace vitré dilaté entre intérieur et extérieur, sorte d'étroite serre tempérée, se développe un écosystème constitué de plantes dépolluantes et sélectionnées pour leurs propriétés purificatrices. Traversant ce jardin absorbant, l'air vicié est épuré de ses toxines et odeurs puis injecté dans le restaurant, fournissant une base atmosphérique neutre et saine à l'ensemble du lieu.

4. Boudoir anéchoïque
A l'écart du tumulte d'une salle de bar, il doit exister un lieu calme, plus intime, dans lequel le secret des conversations est retenu par l'architecture. Ici, le son est donc la composante atmosphérique principale, celle qui dicte la forme à l'espace. Malgré le principe de circulation d'air et de fluidité visuelle du café, le boudoir doit être complètement isolé phoniquement. Pour cela, un aménagement inspiré des chambres anéchoïques est créé dans ce petit salon. Ainsi piégé dans les circonvolutions de la mousse acoustique encadrant l'espace, le son émis par les usagers et par le dispositif musical ne quitte pas le cercle confidentiel de la table…

5. Fumoir hormonal
Avec les récentes restrictions sur le tabagisme, fumer dans un bar est souvent interdit à l'intérieur. Pourtant, s'ils sont conçus comme des chambres isolées, les fumoirs se glissent désormais entre les lignes des réglementations sur ces lieux. Pour le fumoir de notre café, nous avons voulu réfléchir à l'isolement induit par ces règlements et trouver un lien invisible avec le reste du lieu.
Il est bien connu que la consommation de tabac coupe la faim, or notre programme est un café/restaurant. Ainsi, les fumeurs isolés dans le fumoir sont hormonalement prédisposés à ignorer la fonction dinatoire du lieu.
De récentes études sur la production de la CCK (cholécystokinine, une des hormones de la faim) indiquent qu'une courte exposition à de basses températures permet de stimuler fortement la faim. Ainsi, le fumoir sera un lieu réfrigéré par le sol, doté d'une puissante extraction des fumées qui seront évacuées au travers d'une double peau en verre. L'architecture du fumoir est alors mise toute entière au service d'un rééquilibrage des effets du tabac sur l'organisme, afin de reconnecter l'usager avec la fonction du lieu.

My friend Pascal Grasso recently achieved several works (an apartment, an office and a showroom). Following a general graphical idea, he developed an interesting layout for each space using extruded volumes. Like for his previous project Nomiya, Pascal asked me to take the pictures of these three projects.

In each issu, new architecture magazine PLOT from Buenos Aires publishes an article about young architecture offices in one specific city… the first one was about London. For the second issu, chief editor Florencia Rodriguez asked me to select a few interesting practices here in Paris. Among a list of ten names, they finally picked four : Philippe Rahm, La Ville Rayée / Face B, Adélaïde & Nicola Marchi, and us (Bétillon / Dorval-Bory). I was also in charge of taking portrait of them, so here they are.

BEING AN IMPRESSIONIST

An interesting article has been published in this week (13/10) french magazine Les Inrockuptibles by architect Philippe Rahm, where he explains his interpretation of the work of Claude Monet and in which I am briefly named along with other artists and architects.

The article:

We thought we were the grandchildren of Duchamp, and we discover that in reality we are descendants of Claude Monet. We were taught to distrust science, and here we rediscover an artist engaged with the scientific avant-garde of his time, working on the principle of colors optical mix of Charles Blanc, or the law of simultaneous contrast theorized by Michel-Eugène Chevreul. In a current analysis of the vaporized and meteorological work of Claude Monet, a possibility exists to draw another genealogy of French contemporary art, which would go back up, through spectral music and Nouveau Roman, in a straight line to the Impressionists ( cf. Révolutions Sonores by Guy Lelong, MF Editions, 2010). What matters most is not the subject but the shapes that may arise from analytical dissociation of the methods we work with. We explore the infinitely small, we analyze the optical or sound spectra, we decompose reality into visual, electromagnetic or thermal particles, then we recompose it, but with a number of its elements, not all of them. In all these works, there is a sort of French light, this rational brightness of the Enlightenment, the whiteness of writing, this almost chemical objectivity, a lack of narrative, but from which emerges something magical, a "disturbing unreality", related to "a further realism more than a deliberate fiction" as Gerard Genette said about Robbe-Grillet. Today, a number of our work are coming within the scope of this descent : those of architects Berger&Berger or Nicolas Dorval-Bory, designer Mathieu Lehanneur, artists Loris Gréaud and Laurent Grasso. I am an impressionist too.

Nous pensions être les petits-enfants de Duchamp, et nous découvrons qu'en réalité nous descendons de Claude Monet. On nous a appris à nous méfier de la science, et voici qu'on redécouvre un artiste en prise avec l'avant-garde scientifique de son époque, travaillant sur le principe du mélange optique des couleurs de Charles Blanc ou sur la loi du contraste simultané théorisée par Michel-Eugène Chevreul. Il y a dans la relecture actuelle de l'œuvre vaporisée et météorologique de Claude Monet la possibilité de tracer une autre généalogie de l'art contemporain français, qui remonterait, par la musique spectrale et le Nouveau Roman, en droite ligne jusqu'aux impressionnistes (cf. Révolutions sonores... de Guy Lelong, MF Editions, 2010). Ce qui compte n'est pas le sujet mais les formes qui peuvent surgir de la dissociation analytique des moyens avec lesquels on travaille. On explore l'infiniment petit, on analyse les spectres optiques ou sonores, on décompose le réel en particules visuelles, électromagnétiques ou thermiques, puis on le recompose, mais avec un certain nombre de ses éléments, pas tous. Dans l'ensemble de ces travaux, il y a une sorte de lumière française, cette clarté rationnelle des Lumières, la blancheur de l'écriture, cette objectivité presque chimique, l'absence de narration, mais dont se dégage quelque chose de magique, une "troublante irréalité", qui relèverait "non pas d'une fiction délibérée, mais d'un réalisme plus poussé", comme le disait Gérard Genette à propos de Robbe-Grillet. Aujourd'hui, un certain nombre de nos travaux s'inscrivent dans cette descendance, ceux des architectes Berger&Berger ou Nicolas Dorval-Bory, du designer Mathieu Lehanneur, des artistes Loris Gréaud ou Laurent Grasso. Je suis moi aussi un impressionniste.

CONCRETE COMPOSITION IN JOLIMONT

Raphaël and I recently produced a draft for a small extension of a classical house in Toulouse. Using an existing garage, the client wanted to convert it into a small hotel room, adding a second floor to it. Following the building regulation of the neighborhood, we had to create a shifted and cantilevered volume supported by a concrete wall, generating an interesting relation with the existing structure.

Raphaël et moi avons récemment réalisé une esquisse pour une petite extension de maison à Toulouse. Le client souhaitait convertir un garage existant en un petit gîte urbain, en ajoutant un étage au volume existant. En respectant les règlements urbains du quartier, nous avons dû créer un volume décalé, en porte-à-faux mais soutenu par un voile de béton, générant une relation intéressante à la structure existante.

Thanks to a proposal by my friend Yannick Mas, I'm taking part in an interesting introductory project to architecture in a small middle school of a lower-class neighborhood, the cité de Grand Vaux. The project seeks to teach the architectural conception of a sustainable small public library to grade 7 pupils. More information after the first session, next wednesday!

It's in the very same building that we (Max Zolkwer office) made the renovation of an apartment I had wrote about here.

LEAVING ARGENTINA... BACK TO FRANCE

In order to take better care of our european projects, I sadly left Buenos Aires in June for good. I thank all the people, architects or not, I met there (both in Chile and Argentina) who made this adventure such a great experience.

The office is settling again in Paris in September.
We hope that new projects will soon lead us again in South America!

A FEW SOUTHERN TELESCOPES

I recently read that Chile had been chosen by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) to build its very new telescope (E-ELT) on Cerro Armazones, to be the largest ever with a single 42m wide mirror. The images of the site are wonderful, and the 3D image of the project let you guess that it will be one of the most important scientific facilities in the world. It will be fully functionnal in 2018.
I wish I could have visited the other very famous telescope in Chile, the VLT, but didn't have the oportunity. Located on the Cerro Paranal, it is actually composed of 4 giant telescopes linked together to simulate a larger array.
However, I had the chance to visit the CASLEO telescope a month ago, in the argentinian Andes, near Mendoza. It cannot be compared with the two previously named, but the facility is quite interesting and the location, in the National Park of Leoncito, is beautiful.

J'ai récemment lu que le Chili avait été choisi par le European Southern Observatory (ESO) pour construire son nouveau très grand téléscope (E-ELT), qui sera le plus grand avec un seul miroir de 42m de diamètre. Les images du site sont fabuleuses, et les vues 3D du projet laisse deviner que ce sera l'une des plus importantes installations scientifiques au monde.
J'aurais aimé pouvoir visiter l'autre très célèbre télescope chilien, le VLT, mais n'en ai pas eu l'opportunité. Situé sur le Cerro Paranal, il est en fait constitué de 4 télescopes géants liés ensemble pour simuler un plus grand tableau.
Cependant, j'ai eu la chance de visiter le téléscope de CASLEO il y a un mois, dans les Andes argentines, à coté de Mendoza. Il ne peut être comparé avec les deux précédemment cités, mais l'installation est assez intéressante et le site, dans le Parc National du Leoncito, est superbe.

RECONSTRUCTING ACEH - OUT NOW!

Almost two years ago I wrote about my architect friends Eléonore Labattut and Simon Déprez who were conducting a study in Aceh region, Indonesia to investigate the post-tsunami reconstruction.
Then, after carefully collecting data in a 5 months on-site study, and almost one year analyzing, interpreting, organizing the results, their book has just been published a few days ago. Entitled "Après le tsunami, reconstruire l'habitat en Aceh", it is edited by URD (Urgence Réhabilitation Développement), a NGO defining itself as "a research, evaluation and training institute [which] area of expertise is humanitarian action and post-crisis reconstruction".
Simon, also a photographer, took all the wonderful pictures featured in the book, giving the study a more sensitive and human scale.This is my translation of the back cover :

After the damages caused by the 2004 tsunami, hundreds of NGO and international organizations came to Aceh, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. About a hundred of them engaged there a long work of dwelling reconstruction. 500 000 Acehnese were then homeless and, within the next 4 years, 140 300 houses were rebuilt thanks to a part of the 7.8 billions of dollars gathered by the international community and private donations. Never construction had had such a large importance in humanitarian programs.
Written after an on-site study, this book proposes to analyze this large reconstruction program and in particular its impact on the population and the Acehnese territory. The authors question the conditions of appropriation and of viability of the rebuilt houses, according to their architectural typologies, their construction method and their evolution potential. But beyond housing problematics, the study focuses on closely related areas such as urban planning, real estate, economic aid or articulation between the emergency phase and development programs. Special focus is made on the post-conflict context in which this reconstruction took place, following the peace agreement signed in 2005 and that put an end to a 30 years guerilla between GAM separatists and the national government.

Taking place in an impoverished and isolated area due to a long conflict, did this exceptionally scaled operation of reconstruction allowed to set the bases for a sustainable social and economic development in Aceh area?

Il y a presque deux ans j'ai écrit un article sur mes amis architectes Eléonore Labattut et Simon Déprez qui avaient entrepris une étude dans la région d'Aceh, en Indonésie pour enquêter sur la reconstruction post-tsunami.
Après une soigneuse collecte de données en 5 mois d'études sur place, et près d'un an d'analyse, d'interprétation, d'organisation des résultats, leur livre vient d'être publiée il y a quelques jours. Intitulée "Après le tsunami, Reconstruire l'habitat en Aceh", il est édité par l'URD (Urgence Réhabilitation Développement), une ONG se définissant comme " institut associatif de recherche, d’évaluation et de formation sur l’action humanitaire et la reconstruction post-crise [dont] l'objectif est d’améliorer les pratiques afin d’assurer aux populations affectées par des crises une amélioration de leur situation.".
Simon, également photographe, a pris toutes les superbes photos illustrant l'ouvrage, conférant à l'étude une dimension plus sensible et humaine.Un extrait de la quatrième de couverture :

A la suite des ravages causés par le tsunami de 2004, plusieurs centaines d'ONG et d'organisations internationales se sont rendues en Aceh, sur l'île indonésienne de Sumatra. Une centaine d'entre elles y ont engagé un long travail de reconstruction d'habitat. 500 000 Achinais étaient alors sans abri et, au cours des quatre années qui ont suivi, 140 300 maisons ont été reconstruites grâce à une partie des quelque 7.8 milliards de dollars recueillis par la communauté internationale et les donateurs privés. Jamais la construction n'avait tenu une aussi grande place dans les programmes humanitaires.

Ecrit à la suite d'une enquête de terrain, cet ouvrage se propose d'analyser ce vaste programme de reconstruction et notamment son impact sur la population et le territoire achinais. Les auteurs interrogent les conditions d'appropriation et de viabilité des maisons reconstruites suivant leurs typologies architecturales, leurs méthodes de construction et leur potentiel évolutif. Mais au-delà des problématiques liées à la maison, l'étude s'intéresse aux domaines connexes que sont la planification, le foncier, l'aide économique ou l'articulation entre la phase d'urgence et les programmes de développement. L'accent est mis sur le contexte de post-conflit dans lequel s'est déroulée la reconstruction, suite à l'accord de paix signé en 2005 qui a mis fin à une guérilla de trente ans entre les séparatistes du GAM et le gouvernement national.

Prenant place dans une région appauvrie et isolée par un long conflit, cette opération de reconstruction à l'ampleur exceptionnelle a-t-elle permis de poser les bases d'un développement social et économique soutenable pour la région d'Aceh?

D’autres détails constructifs peuvent avoir leur importance : les structures des maisons de YEU à Kuala Bubon ou encore celles de la Croix-Rouge allemande laissent dépasser les nez de poutre du premier étage de plusieurs dizaines de centimètres vers l’extérieur. Si elle peut rappeler certaines formes architecturales des constructions traditionnelles en bois, cette configuration permet surtout l’accroche de structures complémentaires (type balcons) ou d’autres extensions.

b. Participation à la construction de la maison (p. 114)
- Former des villageois, souvent pêcheurs ou agriculteurs, aux métiers de maçon ou de charpentier demande du temps. De plus, une formation rapide ne permet pas toujours aux travailleurs d’acquérir un savoir-faire très pointu. Il est plus facile de former un homme à la confection de briques qu’à la conception de charpentes. Les formations hâtives, dans ces cas de participation, ne permettent pas de développer des savoir-faire réellement qualifiants.- En Aceh, les années de conflit ont bouleversé les habitudes et les rythmes de travail. Un état d’esprit « au jour le jour » rend difficile la fidélisation des ouvriers et le travail journalier, ce qui perturbe l’organisation du travail et l’avancée du chantier.

Designing the absent is a recent small competition that took place in Antwerp, Belgium, and aiming to generate ideas for a new tower to the city's cathedral. This excerpt from the website explains the project :

‘If we put the emphasis on the absent we emphasise the structure‘

The cathedral of Antwerp remains unfinished. When they started building it in the 14th century they didn’t take the future in account and soon ran out of finances. They made the building functional but lost one tower.
This absence creates a blank canvas for today. By generating ideas for a new tower, we can put a focus on the cathedral itself. The given fact of an absent element within an existing structure functions as a great generator for ideas.

‘By playing with the idea of the absence, we generate a focus.’

The proposal had to be one single image (an altered copy of the provided photo) and a short text... here is our entry :Absence is not always what we think. In architecture, void is perceived as absence, but this particular thing we inhabit, the empty space that surrounds us is actually a multitude, a density of air, of molecules which properties truly define what we call architecture.

Inside the church, just like everywhere else around us exists this void, this dense absence made of air. Though invisible, it can make you feel cold, warm, wet or dry : atmosphere is the real architecture. Thus, what if we could replace the “absence of rock and steel” of the unfinished second tower by the exact same void contained inside the first one? What if we could recreate some of the properties of the architecture of the old tower in a new one, one that wouldn’t have any classical existence but an abstract yet truly physical one.

Using a single high vertical thin rod featuring hundreds of controlled heating nozzles, placed on the top of the second tower base, we could imagine a programmed thermic system reproducing the first tower existing temperature conditions. The meteorology then created would become the true present architecture, filling the absence without touchable but sensitive matter. This imitated climate would be then sacrified to the wind, an ephemeral atmosphere to be felt by a few though visible to no one…

Designing the absent est un récent petit concours situé à Anvers en Belgique, dont le but était de générer des idées pour une nouvelle tour pour la cathédrale de la ville. Cet extrait du site web explique le projet :

La cathédrale d'Anvers reste inachevée. Lorsque sa construction a commencé au XIVe siècle le futur n’a pas été pris en compte et les finances se sont rapidement épuisées. L’édifice a été terminé de façon à fonctionner, mais il a perdu une tour.
Cette absence crée un canevas vierge pour aujourd'hui. En générant des idées pour une nouvelle tour, nous pouvons mettre l'accent sur la cathédrale elle-même. Le fait d’avoir un élément absent au sein d'une structure existante fonctionne comme un excellent générateur d’idées.

'En jouant avec l'idée de l'absence, on génère une focalisation.'

La proposition devait comporter une seule image (une copie altérée d’une photo fournie) et un court texte... Voici notre projet :
L'absence n'est pas toujours ce que l’on croit. En architecture, le vide est perçu comme une absence, mais cette chose particulière que nous habitons, l'espace vide qui nous entoure est en réalité une multitude, une densité d'air, de molécules dont les propriétés définissent réellement ce que nous appelons l'architecture.

Dans l'église d’Anvers, comme partout autour de nous existe ce vide, cette dense absence faite d'air. Bien qu'invisible, il peut nous faire ressentir le froid, la chaleur, l’humidité ou la sécheresse : l'atmosphère est la véritable architecture. Ainsi, que se passerait-il si nous pouvions remplacer “l'absence de roche et d'acier" de la deuxième tour inachevée par exactement le même le vide contenu dans la première? Et si nous pouvions recréer certaines des propriétés de l'architecture de l’ancienne tour dans une nouvelle, une construction qui n'aurait alors pas une existence classique mais une présence abstraite et pourtant réellement physique.

En utilisant une simple fine tige verticale dotée de centaines de buses chauffante contrôlées, placé sur le dessus de la base de la deuxième tour, nous pourrions imaginer un système thermique programmé reproduisant les conditions existantes de température dans la première tour. La météorologie ensuite créé deviendrait une véritable architecture, remplissant l'absence sans matière palpable mais sensible. Ce climat imité serait ensuite sacrifié aux vents, une atmosphère éphémère ressentie par quelques-uns bien que vue par personne...

Raphaël Bétillon and I submitted a project to a museum competition in Maribor, Slovenia. We developped an interesting concept, leading to a very simple building somehow inspired by both the Pompidou Center and a regular fridge... Below is the text of the project.

“Harvest the sun, use the water.
With energies build a frame to the program.
Make a box that is a museum that is a cloud.”

SITE

Maribor is the second largest city of Slovenia, north east of the country. Lied on the river Drava, it has chosen to settle its new art gallery on a very central site, between the north bank and Koroska street, a main axis.
From an urban perspective, the critical issue is to create a real connection between the city, the river and the museum. To this end, the project chose to clear a large floor space, an open landscape more than a built density, linking the Drava to Koroska street. The museum will no longer be an obstacle to this route, but rather an urban catalyzer : risen off the natural ground that then becomes a cultural plaza, most of the program crystallizes in an abstract volume, a floating landmark, a technical and oniric art citadel.

The museum north area topography is then modified to accentuate the natural slope and create a large amphitheater, introducing the access to the museum plaza. This plaza, hiding underground programmatic elements whose connection with the bank road is necessary, becomes a privileged sheltered area, a belvedere on the Drava, punctuated by reflections from large corrugated glass tubes and submerged by a strange southern light glittering between the river and a shimmering ceiling, just like a mirage in the desert.

Echoing both the concentric quadrilaterals that define the map of Maribor and the central location of the museum in the city and its different views, the project materializes in this pure squared logic, an abstract and symbolic form of the cultural nature of the place. Even if the climatic orientation is well though and visible in its architecture, its urban orientation does not favor an axis: the museum is central.
The tower of Sodne Stolp is one of the key landmarks of the city. In plan, the museum and park site extends this strong element by creating a structuring constellation of circles with various scales, both in the architecture of the museum and in the landscaping of the park.

VOLUME - FLOW - CLIMATE

The building itself is designed straight from the rationalization of the museum program to three key parameters: volume, circulation, climate. These three factors then define the essence of the project, in a simple and identifiable way.

Thus, the main volume is a sort of Rubik’s cube, 54×54x27m structurally independent box, three-dimensionally triangulated, whose edges are divided into 3 modules (27 boxes : 18×18x9m). Thought of like an accumulation of 27 Brian O’Doherty’s White Cubes, it provides the necessary space for museum activities, uncluttered and bright, opened and accessible. Glazed on all four sides (as protected by a climatic double skin), the volume is over-insulated on the underside by a visible multilayer aluminum foil, and protected on the roof by shading/photovoltaic panels.

Circulations - 5 large vertical tubes - are positioned independently but in order to serve the most logically possible the different areas of the museum. These transparent tubes (corrugated glass, offering greater resistance) allow the connection between the basement and exhibition spaces, between the plaza and the library, between offices and storage, between delivery ramps and the catering area. The two East tubes are reserved for museum staff and bulky items, while the two West ones are used by visitors. The large central tube serves as the main circulation, a landmark, a meeting place shaped like a journey. In its nucleus, each of the 5 tubes features a structural core, wrapping the elevators, that supports the main volume .

Climate is the 3rd founding element of the project. More thought of like a machine rather than an inert space, the museum seeks its materialization in the direct application of its climate control techniques. In the manner of the Pompidou Center, the project pushes outside the technical elements that ensure its functioning, namely an ecological climatic functioning taking into account the natural available resources. By combining various sustainable technologies (solar cooling, heat pump, photovoltaics, cooling mist), the building takes on a new architectural layer, both operating, altering and validating the two previous elements (volume + circulations) already in place. This new meteorological dimension also creates particular spaces and materiality, not determined by a traditional architectural language but emerging directly from a new climatic approach of the program: an active tubular façade also source of energy, micro-climates terraces acting like double skins, a blurred building limit offering new perceptions, etc…
In an attempt to homogenize and stabilize the internal temperature (the storage areas are also placed in the basement, where the climate is more constant), the project can be seen as an isolated box wrapped in a heat-exchange interface, like an ordinary refrigerator or radiator.

EXHIBITION

Exhibition areas are spread over the last two levels in a large open space. The permanent exhibition space, gathering artworks requiring special storage conditions, is located on the 2nd level, sheltered from light and temperature variations. The Architecture Center, also located on the 2nd level, allows a coherent organization with the permanent exhibits.
Temporary exhibitions are settled on the top floor to take maximum advantage of natural light, appropriately shaded on the roof. In two square modules (18×18m, 324m2) the floor is offset by + /-4m in height in order to promptly identify a ceiling height of 12m, to accommodate works of greater size in each of two levels of exposure.
Both montes charges laid in the tubes is used to deliver works to those floors. Widely open to the outside exhibition areas can expand on 3000m2 of outdoor terraces.

WATER FROM THE SUN

To ensure the climatic balance of the museum, the project uses various sources of renewable energy and thermal vectors.
First, the ventilation of the museum is made through a geothermal heat pump, heating / cooling incoming outside air through an underground canal (+ / - 16 º C) and heat exchange with the extracted stale air. In summer, part of the stale air is evacuated through the roof, by natural convection, reducing air pumping energy consumption and creating in some areas natural air flows. Vertical air ducts are located in the five glass tubes.
Cooling of the museum is provided by an innovative system of solar cooling. The vacuum tubes of the south facade heat the water to a temperature of 80 º C, which is then sent to an adsorption machine (adsorbent: silica gel). Through a vaporization/condensation heat exchange process, cold flow is produced in a separated water circuit. Necessary to the proper functioning of the system, a third water circuit, called coolant (not freezing), is used in this principle and runs through the north facade of the building. Thus, the quantity of cold produced is proportional to the amount of sunshine, making the use of this system particularly relevant. On the other hand, its very low power consumption is counterbalanced by the photovoltaic electric production on the roof.
In winter, the vacuum heating collector tubes can be used to directly preheat the building.
The water system of heating/cooling then runs directly into the thick concrete slabs, ensuring an ideal inertial diffusion for a museum, where sudden changes of temperature are avoided.
Finally, a occasional misting system is included in the technical tubular façade through hundreds of high pressure nozes, enabling the creation of an artificial cloud from the filtered water from the Drava. This option, used to refresh both the envelope of the museum and its surroundings (bank, park) can be programmed and operated as an event to create unusual situations around the museum that becomes itself dynamic, like a floating cloud, a separated active meteorology in the landscape of Maribor.

WORK AT THE GALPÓN

After 6 months at the Galpón, Max Zolkwer's office and the argentinian branch of Supersudaca, here are a few images of two projects I managed there. For the first one (team : Max Zolkwer, Cecilia Álvarez Raso and me), here is the text from Max's website :

"Los Andes" housing development was built by architect Fermín Bereterbide in 1927. It is a group of multifamily housing that occupies the entire block in a "hof" shape, proper to northern Europe. Originally intended for social housing, with years the population was replaced by middle-class familes due to its high spatial and constructive qualities. It is currently occupied by families who value community life, generated by semi-public spaces and who know the history of the building, turning it into a place of worship.

The department we are renovating had been previously transformed and was in good general conditions. Besides general arrangements and enlarging the master bath, the most important was to create the two studios (one individual and one for teaching) and a large 135 linear meters library. The largest office is separated from the living by mobile libraries, which lets you enlarge the living room when not used for classes or study groups.

The second project is Max's own house, in Almagro neightborhood. A large patio-house to be widely remodelated, he wanted it to be more luminous and coherent. The construction work already begun there, and is expected to be completed by june.

L'ensemble "Los Andes" a été construit par l'architecte Firmin Bereterbide en 1927. Il s'agit d'un groupe de logements collectifs qui occupe tout le bloc, en forme de "Hof" propre à l'Europe du Nord. Il était initialement destiné à des logements sociaux. Grâce à la grande qualité spatiale et constructive, la population a été remplacée avec les années par des familles de classe moyenne. Il est actuellement occupé par des familles qui apprécient la vie communautaire valeur générée par les espaces semi-publics et qui connaissent l'histoire de l'immeuble, le transformant en lieu culte.

L'appartement que nous rénovons avait déjà été transformé par le passé et était en général en bon état. En plus de réparations générales et l'agrandissement de la salle de bains principale, le plus important était de créer deux studios (l'un individuel et l'autre pour l'enseignement) et une grande bibliothèque de 135ml de livres. Le plus grand bureau est séparé du séjour par des bibliothèques mobiles, ce qui permet d'agrandir le salon lorsque le studio n'est pas utilisé pour certains cours ou groupes d'étude.

Le second projet est la propre maison de Max, dans le quartier d'Almagro. Grande maison avec patio nécessitant une importante rénovation, Max la souhaitait plus lumineuse et cohérente. Le chantier a déjà commencé, et on attend la fin des travaux d'ici juin.

SET ME UP WITH THE WIND

In October I luckily met David Carqueijeiro, a portugese architect travelling through Argentina. We proposed him to make an installation at our place. The follwing is from David :

"Set me up with the wind" is a reflection of my travelling experience through Cuba and Argentina from the last few months.
The places I've been to, the communication with people, the exchange of information and experiences and most of all the sense of freedom are represented in this work.
From Cuba to Argentina, this sense of freedom is not the same for everyone and contrasts for different reasons including political, economical and cultural.
91 days passed from Havan to Buenos Aires, 91 days of my own freedom, my own time getting different points of view of how people feel about their own freedom and how different it is from mine.
91 days reflected in 91 windmills... 91 days of me and you.
91 wind mills for the kids I worked with at ciudad oculta, Buenos Aires.

PAYSAGES EN EXIL - 2

Submitted a few weeks ago to a call for projects for the national event "Imaginez Maintenant", our project PAYSAGES EN EXIL has just been accepted by the comitee and will therefore be build in Toulouse in July 2010.

Raphaël and I are currently working on the technical part, in particular the fog system. Meanwhile, a website featuring all the winning projects is being developped by "Imaginez Maintenant" team, and will been soon online.

Proposé il y a quelques semaines pour un appel à projets pour l'évévement national "Imaginez Maintenant", notre projet PAYSAGES EN EXIL vient juste d'être accepté et sera donc construit à Toulouse en juillet 2010.

Raphaël et moi travaillons actuellement sur la partie technique, en particulier le système de brouillard. Pendant ce temps, un site web contenant tous les projets gagnants est developpé par l'équipe d'"Imaginez Maintenant", et sera prochainement visible en ligne.

8.8 is the stunning magnitude of the earthquake that striked Chile last week (27th feb 2010).

Quoting Wikipedia :

This was the strongest earthquake affecting Chile since the magnitude 9.5 1960 Valdivia earthquake (the most energetic earthquake ever recorded worldwide), and is the strongest earthquake worldwide since the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.[106] It is the seventh strongest earthquake ever recorded (the 1906 Ecuadorian earthquake is tied for seventh with it).

The damages are quite huge, and as I lived in Santiago for a few monthes I trully sympathize with the people there, now trying to rebuild the country.

PAYSAGES EN EXIL

PAYSAGES EN EXIL (Landscapes in exile) is the title of the installation Raphaël Bétillon and I have just submitted to a call for projects made by the Choregraphic Development Center of Toulouse. In july 2010, this organization proposes to celebrate the reconversion of the hospital of La Grave in a cultural center with 4 days of events in and around the building.

Our proposal comes from this quote from Gilles Clément :

Plants travel. Grass mostly. They silently move in the way of the winds. Nothing can stop the wind. By harvesting clouds, one would be surprised to get imponderable seeds mixed with loess, fertile dusts. In the sky yet unforeseeable landscapes are being designed. Chance organizes the details, uses every possible vehicle to distribute the species. Everything suits the transport, from ocean currents to shoe soles. Most of the trip belongs to animals. Nature charters birds, berry eaters, gardening ants, subversive and quiet sheeps, which fleece holds fields and fields of seeds. And also man. Restless animal, always in the move, free swapper of diversity.

PAYSAGES EN EXIL est le titre de l'installation que Raphaël Bétillon et moi venont de soumettre dans l'appel à projet lancé par le Centre de Développement Chorégraphique de Toulouse. En juillet 2010, cet organisme propose de fêter la reconversion de l'hôpital de La Grave en centre culturel par 4 jours d'événements dans et autour de l'édifice.

Notre proposition part de cette citation de Gilles Clément :

Les plantes voyagent. Les herbes surtout. Elles se déplacent en silence à la façon des vents. On ne peut rien contre le vent. En moissonnant les nuages, on serait surpris de récolter d’impondérables semences mêlées de loess, poussières fertiles. Dans le ciel déjà se dessinent d’imprévisibles paysages. Le hasard organise les détails, utilise tous les vecteurs possibles pour la distribution des espèces. Tout convient au transport,des courants marins aux semelles des chaussures. L’essentiel du voyage revient aux animaux. La nature affrète les oiseaux consommateurs de baies, les fourmis jardinières, les moutons calmes, subversifs, dont la toison contient des champs et des champs de graines. Et puis l’homme. Animal agité en mouvements incessants, libre échangeur de la diversité.

STRIPES - SMALL APARTMENT

I've been working for a few weeks on a small apartment project in Paris. The place is really tricky (27 m², one window, 1st floor) but the challenge is interesting.
After several sketches, I came up to a simple solution, allowing daylight to reach every corner of the place and offering a large free area to live in.
The idea is to open the whole space and to condensate the functions on the edges of the apartment, basically generating 3 stripes : 2 functional, 1 undefined.

Je travaille depuis quelques temps sur un projet pour un petit appartement à Paris. Le lieu est vraiment compliqué (27m², une fenêtre, rez-de-chaussée) mais le défi est intéressant.
Après plusieurs croquis, je suis arrivé à une solution simple, permettant à la lumière du jour d'atteindre chaque coin de l'appartement et offrant un grand espace libre à habiter.
L'idée est d'ouvrir tout l'espace et de condenser les fonctions sur les côtés de l'appartement, en générant simplement 3 bandes : 2 fonctionnelles, 1 indéfinie.

LAYERS HOUSE

Nowadays, the concept of sustainability is increasingly becoming a major issue in architectural design, in a context of global warming but also exponential energy exploitation. Unfortunately, it is common to find that the answers are more in the application of techniques onto traditional architectural strategies or in developing original but formatted typologies, unrelated to the context and its inherent drawbacks and opportunities.

For the Xella house, we specifically wanted to reply to these two issues, namely creating a new architectural typology ensuing both from a technical functioning and the characteristics of the site and program. Working with the range of Xella aerated concrete blocks, we developed a simple strategy to use in the best way this material various properties.

CASE

The program is a mountain refuge, located on a steep terrain. This exemplarily functional and energetic efficient type of vernacular habitat is an indispensable reference for such a project, much more than a traditional second home in the hills. Like a refuge or a traditional châlet, our project fits into the site seeking primarily to protect itself from cold, which can be particularly strong on the hills of Santiago. The refuge, whose function is to accommodate guests engaged in winter sports during the day, has to be a friendly and warm but easy place to use, since its goal is meal and rest.

LAYOUT

Thus, the project is organized around a squared plan, allowing flexibility of use and architectural efficiency. This compact design allows a maximum optimization of the Xella blocks but also a very low coefficient of heat loss. To retain maximum heat, the house is settled the closest to the ground, with no overhang. The central courtyard is designed as a buffer space, generating a variation in the organization of the program while providing a significant supply of light and fresh air in summer. The entire house is also really thought of as a full climate. The northerly aspect (the project is located in the south hemisphere), a black roughcast coating and various passive heating devices generate a very pleasant interior atmosphere in winter. The functional distribution of spaces is organized according to the most suitable temperature for each activity, playing with the different levels allowed by the natural slope and with a concentric organization of the program.

LAYERS

This principle leads to a living room and kitchen facing due north with a large bay window, then going up the bedrooms, and in the back finally the bathrooms, due south although with high indoor temperature. The core functions are then grouped in the center of the house, which is warmer, leaving space in the east and west sides. Here, the serving stairs allow air to circulate freely. In the way of a clothe sleeve, the plan of the house is conceived as a succession of layers, which properties varies depending on the requirements of thermal insulation. Thus, the separation of bedrooms and living-room is only guaranteed by a thick felt curtain, pointing to the work and own story of Joseph Beuys, while the patio or exterior walls use various types of Xella blocks, plus a insulating and waterproof coating.

THERMAL LANDSCAPE

To heat the house, we use two passive systems, coupled together.

Geothermal heat pump: fresh air is pumped from outside the house, south side, then it is filtered and flows through an underground pipe, warmed by geothermal energy of the ground, always around 16 ° C. In its way in, new air shares a common circuit with the extracted stale air of the house. The indoor air (+/- 19°C) then transmits its energy to the incoming fresh air (>0°C).
Trombe Wall: developed by the French engineer Felix Trombe, this system is to harness solar energy in two complementary ways. During the day, fresh air is heated by greenhouse effect between a glass wall and a dark wall. During the night, by phase shift, the heat stored in the high thermal inertia wall (double layer of block Xella 15cm) is redistributed through radiation. The system is controlled by motorized valves to prevent a reverse flow of air overnight.

Fresh air pre-warmed by the geothermal heat pump goes directly into the base of the Trombe wall to be heated. Air flows into the house from the top of the Trombe wall at a high temperature, most of the time enough to avoid the use of alternative heating systems. The air is then freely distributed thanks to the shape of the house, circulating in convection around the patio. Stale air is sucked into the bathrooms, at high humidity, and then vented outside. Along the way, this hot air will transmit its energy to the incoming fresh air but also to the jacuzzi on the terrace.
The supporting structure of the house is made out of 15 cm Xella blocks, lined with a vapor barrier and 10cm Xella panels, with a black waterproof roughcast coating to maximize solar gain and limit the accumulation of snow on the roof. The roof structure consists of wooden beams, improving inside acoustic comfort.

LAYERS HOUSE

De nos jours la notion de développement durable devient de plus en plus un des enjeux majeurs de la conception architecturale, face au réchauffement climatique mais aussi à l’exploitation exponentielle des énergies. Hélas, il est fréquent de constater que les réponses apportées à ce problème relèvent davantage de l’application de technique sur des stratégies architecturales traditionnelles ou du développement de typologies originales mais formatées, détachées du contexte et de ses possibilités et handicaps intrinsèques.
Dans le cadre du projet de maison Xella, nous avons souhaité répondre particulièrement à ces deux problématiques, à savoir créer une typologie architecturale nouvelle découlant tout à la fois d’un fonctionnement technique que des caractéristiques du site et du programme. En utilisant la gamme de blocs en béton cellulaire Xella, nous avons développé une stratégie simple pour exploiter le matériau au mieux selon ses différentes propriétés.

CAS

Le programme est un refuge de montagne, situé sur un terrain à forte inclinaison. Ce type d’habitat, d’une efficacité fonctionnelle et énergétique exemplaires, est une référence incontournable pour un tel projet, bien plus qu’un classique résidence secondaire dans les collines. Tout comme pour un refuge ou un chalet traditionnel, notre projet s’intègre dans le site en cherchant principalement à se protéger du froid qui peut être particulièrement vif sur les hauteurs de Santiago. Ayant pour fonction de loger les vacanciers s’adonnant dans la journée aux sports d’hiver, le refuge se doit d’être un lieu convivial et chaleureux mais simple et fonctionnel, puisqu’il n’a vocation qu’au repas et au repos.

ENVIRONNEMENT

Ainsi, le projet s’organise autour d’un plan carré, permettant flexibilité d’usage et efficacité architecturale. Cette forme compacte permet une optimisation maximale des blocs Xella mais aussi un très faible coefficient de déperdition thermique. Afin de conserver un maximum de chaleur, la maison s’implante au plus proche du sol, sans porte à faux. Le patio central est pensé comme un espace tampon, générant une variation dans l’organisation du programme tout en permettant un apport significatif de lumière et d’air frais en été. L’ensemble de la maison est d’ailleurs véritablement pensé comme un climat à part entière. L’orientation plein nord, un revêtement de crépis noir ainsi que différents système de chauffage passifs génèrent une atmosphère intérieure particulièrement agréable en hiver. La répartition fonctionnelle des espaces s’organise selon les températures les plus adéquates pour chaque activité, en jouant sur des différences de niveaux permises par l’inclinaison du terrain ainsi que sur l’organisation concentrique du programme.

COUCHES

Ce principe conduit à un living et cuisine orientés plein nord, disposant d’une large baie vitrée, puis en remontant on accède aux chambre et enfin aux salles de bain, plein sud, à la température intérieur élevée. Les fonctions essentielles sont donc également regroupées au centre de la maison, plus chaud, dégageant les côtés est et ouest. Ici, les escaliers de desserte permettent à l’air de circuler librement. A la manière d’une manche de vêtement, le plan de la maison est pensé comme une succession d’épaisseurs, de couches aux propriétés variées selon les exigences d’isolation thermique. Ainsi, la séparation des chambres et du living est assurée uniquement par un épais rideau de feutre, rappelant les travaux et la propre histoire de Joseph Beuys, tandis que le patio ou les murs extérieurs utilisent différents types de blocs Xella, plus un revêtement étanche et isolant.

PAYSAGES THERMIQUES

Afin de chauffer la maison, nous utilisons deux systèmes passifs couplés ensemble.

Pompe à chaleur géothermique : l’air neuf pompé à l’extérieur de la maison, côté sud, il est filtré puis circule dans un conduit sous-terrain permettant de se réchauffer grâce à la géothermie du sol, toujours aux alentours de 16°C. Dans son parcours l’air neuf partage un circuit commun avec l’air vicié extrait de la maison. L’air intérieur à +/- 19°C transmet donc son énergie à l’air frais entrant (jusqu’à 0°C)
Mur Trombe : ce système mis au point par l’ingénieur français Félix Trombe consiste à exploiter l’énergie solaire de deux manières complémentaires. Durant la journée, l’air frais est chauffé par effet de serre entre une paroi vitrée et un mur sombre. Durant la nuit, par déphasage, la chaleur emmagasinée par le mur à grande inertie thermique (double épaisseur de bloc Xella 15cm) est redistribuée par radiation. Le système est contrôlé par des valves motorisées empêchant une circulation d’air inversée la nuit.

L’air frais préchauffé par la pompe à chaleur géothermique entre directement dans la base du mur Trombe pour y être réchauffé. L’air entre donc dans la maison par le haut du mur Trombe a une température élevée, la plupart du temps largement suffisante pour éviter l’utilisation d’autres systèmes de chauffage. L’air est ensuite librement réparti grâce à la forme de la maison, circulant en convection autour du patio. L’air vicié est ensuite aspiré dans les salles de bain, au taux d’humidité important, pour être ensuite évacué vers l’extérieur. Dans son parcours, cet air chaud transmettra son énergie à l’air neuf entrant mais aussi au jacuzzi de la terrasse.
La structure porteuse de la maison est en blocs Xella 15cm, doublés d’un film pare-vapeur et de panneaux Xella 10cm, avec un revêtement étanche en crépis noir, pour maximiser les apports solaire et limiter l’accumulation de neige sur le toit. La structure du toit est constituée d’une poutraison de bois, favorisant à l’intérieur le confort acoustique.

BEING IN BUENOS AIRES

Pascal & Laurent Grasso, an architect & an artist with whom I use to work time to time, have completed a few monthes ago a project of a temporary structure called "Nomiya", set on the roof of the Palais de Tokyo (instead of last year's hotel room/cell "Everland"). It is some kind of a small private restaurant, that one can reserve for a night.

CASA SOLAR - PART 1

Casa Solar is a project I'm currently working on, located in Northern Chile. Beside many HQE (LEED in the USA), bioclimatic, or other types of environmental buildings, the idea is here to explore a new method for integrating renewable energies in architecture.

The projet begins from a simple analysis : major architectural paradigms changes, as for Modernism, are first initiated by technical revolutions (then also inducing social revolutions). If architects initially consider these developments as detrimental to their Art, at a pinch using them concealed in a classical architecture enveloppe, this very technology is only appearing gradually in the landscape, particularly through functional or technical constructions.

Giving the example of steel structures, Beaux Arts architects first rejected them until the nineteenth century, then slowly started to integrate structural elements in Classical buildings simultaneously to the creation of technical and functional structures (bridges, sheds) by engineers. It is only when bold architects took full use of these technologies, and first getting inspiration from these engineered structures without aesthetic bias, that radical changes of architecture could finally emerge (free plan, curtain wall, etc.)..

My aim is to follow this path in the renewable energies revolution now in progress. To me, this crucial issue, as our future depends of it, is today very badly handled by the various stakeholders of the construction business. Between restricting or unnecessary standards, new-age and green fantasy, quiet technologies mounted on architectures without quality, no satisfactory solution seems to be able to emerge from such a context. A photovoltaic panel on a catalog bungalow, a heat pump in a Case Study House, etc.. in no way this could represent a step forward.

Thus, if one puts this in a historical perspective, it seems logical that the first step of the integration of this revolution would be based - as is - on the operating model of existing technical facilities using these technologies. Ultimately, one could imagine a new architecture, thought from the beginning with this new architectural vocabulary.

On this basis, the Casa Solar project tries to reinterpret the working system of a solar furnace to provide energy (thermal control and power generation) for a home. Inspired by the Odeillo solar furnace, in the Pyrenees mountains, Casa Solar incorporates its two essential elements: the heliostats and the parabolic reflector, to focus sunlight into a single point. Here each of the two elements determines specific areas in which the program can be integrated in an original space organization.

Casa Solar est un projet sur lequel je travaille actuellement, situé au nord du Chili. En marge des nombreuses réalisations HQE, bioclimatiques ou autres formes d'architecture environnementale, le propos est ici d'explorer une nouvelle méthode d'intégration d'énergies renouvelables dans l'architecture.

Le projet part d'une analyse simple : il est fréquent que les changements majeurs de paradigmes architecturaux, comme ce fut le cas pour le Modernisme, sont tout d'abord initiés par des révolutions techniques (induisant également des révolutions sociales). Si les architectes considèrent au départ ces avancées comme néfastes pour leur Art, les utilisant à la rigueur dissimulées dans une enveloppe d'architecture classique, ce n'est que progressivement que la technologie en question s'immisce dans le paysage, notamment par le biais de constructions fonctionnelles ou techniques.

Si l'on cite l'exemple des structures métalliques, on se rend d'abord compte de son rejet de la part des architectes des Beaux Arts jusqu'au XIXe siècle, puis de la timide intégration d'éléments structurels dans des constructions Classiques en parallèle avec la création d'ouvrages techniques et fonctionnels (ponts, hangars) par des ingénieurs. C'est véritablement lorsque des architectes audacieux vont s'emparer pleinement de ces technologies, et d'abord en s'inspirant de ces constructions d'ingénieurs sans préjugés esthétiques, que des changements radicaux de l'architecture vont pouvoir émerger (plan libre, mur rideau, etc.).

Mon propos est de suivre cette voie dans la révolution actuellement en cours, celle des énergies renouvelables. Cette question cruciale, tant notre avenir en dépend, est me semble-t-il aujourd'hui extrêmement mal traitée par les différents acteurs de la construction. Entre normes contraignantes ou inutiles, fantasme new-age ou écolo, technologies discrètes sur architectures sans qualité, aucune solution satisfaisante ne semble pouvoir émerger d'un tel contexte. Un panneau photo-voltaïque sur une maison Phénix, une pompe à chaleur dans une Case Study House, etc. tout cela ne réprésente en rien une avancée.

Ainsi, si l'on remet cette question dans une perspective historique, il me paraît logique que la première étape de l'intégration de cette révolution serait de s'inspirer - tel quel - du fonctionnement d'équipements techniques existants exploitant ces technologies. A terme, on pourrait imaginer une nouvelle architecture, pensée dès le début autour de ce nouveau vocabulaire architectural.

Partant de ce principe, le projet Casa Solar cherche à réinterprêter le fonctionnement d'un four solaire à parabole afin de fournir l'énergie (contrôle thermique et production d'électricité) nécessaire à une habitation. Inspiré par le four solaire d'Odeillo, dans les Pyrénées, Casa Solar en reprend les deux éléments essentiels : les héliostats et la parabole, permettant de concentrer les rayons du soleil en un point focal. Ici chacun des deux éléments détermine des espaces spécifiques, dans lesquels le programme peut s'intégrer dans une nouvelle organisation du lieu.

My close friend Raphaël Bétillon, architect in Toulouse, has just completed a renovation of a nice townhouse in le Busca neighbourhood. As I went to visit him a few weeks ago, he asked me to take some photos of it.

The project is really nice, simple and minimalist. It features some interesting space layouts, as well as nice details...

An old fireplace has been totally modified, to fit a more contemporary style with the 6m long concrete bench, quite inspired by the work of John Pawson.

PHILIPPE RAHM, A NICE INTERVIEW

I found a very good interview of swiss architect Philippe Rahm, featured on Ninunina's blog. I'm not supposed to reproduce it down here, but... I hope Ninunina won't find out or will forgive me.

I admire very much the work of Philippe Rahm and his way of understanding architecture (we asked him 2 years ago to be part of our thesis board of examiners), a particular point of view that in my opinion will become increasingly essential in this new century.

At the same time, Archibook is editing a new book from him, curated by Martine Bouchier (our thesis supervisor), called Architecture Météorologique.

Achievements you are most proud of so far?
Domestic Astronomy. The idea is to think the interior of a house not like a modern, homogenous and continuous manipulated space but as the possibility to be an atmosphere or an astronomy. The project is based on two sources of lights that are diagonally opposed in the space. One source is warm created with incandecent light. The other is more cold, created with fluocompact bulbs. The rhythm of the sofware depending of the temperature mesured by the sensors create a astronomical rhythm in the indoor space.

Challenges of what you do?
I try to stretch architecture between the infinitely small and the infinitely large, between the physiological and the meteorological. We want to reposition the essence of the elements of architecture subsequent to this disintegration of the visible. The tools of architecture must become invisible and light, producing places like free, open landscapes, a new geography, different kinds of meteorology; renewing the idea of form and use between sensation and phenomenon, between the neurological and the meteorological, between the physiological and the atmospheric. We want spaces with no meaning, no narrative; interpretable spaces in which margins disappear, structures dissolve, and limits vanish. It is no longer a case of building images and functions, but of opening climates and interpretations; working on space, on the air and its movements, on the phenomena of conduction, perspiration, convection as transitory, fluctuating meteorological conditions that become the new paradigms of contemporary architecture; moving from metric composition to thermal composition, from structural thinking to climatic thinking, from narrative thinking to meteorological thinking. ‘Composition of the hourly renewal of the air, plan of the levels of relative humidity, inhabitable convection, thermal design, chart of the movement of air, pressures and depressions, stratification of temperatures’ as new ways of architectural composition; and to then to show its programmatic, plastic and sensual potential. Space becomes electromagnetic, chemical, sensorial atmosphere with thermal, olfactory and cutaneous dimensions in which we are immersed and which, by the act of inhabiting, we in turn compose with the breath, perspiration, and thermal radiation of our bodies; the physical, hormonal activity, our movements and clothing. Between the infinitely small of the biological and the infinitely large of the meteorological, architecture must build unlimited sensual exchanges between the body and space, the senses, the skin, breath, the climate, temperature, or variations in humidity and light.

Most memorable exhibitions to date?
My works in Museum or Galleries are critical studies about architecture as language. In these contexts, I always decompose and recompose the element of architecture to try to discover new forms and programs related to a contemporary knowledge. Because very often we work with some elements as habits, which were invented long time ago and we don’t understand that the reasons and the meaning of these elements have changed. The architectural form is composed by parts, by elements and we often considerer that the composition of all these part creates a whole object more interesting than the simple addition of the parts. In this sense, the form of architecture could be perceived as a whole as the Gestalt theory could say. I disagree with this idea and on the contrary, I like to decompose the whole object in separate parts and recompose them again but not in a good order or sometimes with one or two missing element. I think it creates more interesting object because it renew the perception and it’s one motor of the invention. The Gestalt theory say that “the whole is different from the sum of its parts. Our perceptions are governed by a number of laws and a whole object can not be reduced to the simple sum of the stimuli collected, as well. Water is something other than oxygen and hydrogen; a symphony is something else than a succession of notes.” My work is completely the contrary of this idea. It’s a composition of part without any will for touch a whole object. Because very often, the whole object is a conventional propriety, and habit. And when you work by decomposing the whole into parts and recomposing the parts in a new way, you could find more contemporary form, actualized forms. Its what I did for example in two installations: Diurnisme at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2007 and with the winter beach in Saint-Nazaire in France in 2009. Diurnisme is a recomposition of the night, with all the parts that are involve in the night but not in a good order, not in a conventional way. At the end it is a night but It doesn’t look as a night. The winter beach is also a decomposition of the beach into two elements: ultraviolet and iodine. And at the end, these two projects reinvent some new landscapes and visual spaces.

Diurnisme is a critical answer to the introduction of the street lighting in the city during the 19-century, which was at the origin of one the most important social and political revolution of the urban practice and of the form of the city. The ambition was demiurgic: to make the day during the night. And we live henceforth in this endless artificial day in the city. The street lighting caused new urban typologies (the boulevard for example) but was also the cause of new behaviors, those of the noctambulisme, sauntering the evening on the boulevards,etc. It is an ambition of the same order that I want to produce today but more contemporary, more ambiguous: to create the night during the day. My project is to reinvent a new form of night in the continuous artificial day of the modernity. It is to produce the night during the day, physically. It’s a reversed answer to the perpetual day created by the modernity, Internet and the contemporary globalization, a second perversion. After the “Noctambulisme” I would like to invent the “Diurnisme”, using an orange-yellow bright light which wavelengths, upper than 570 nanometers, are perceived by the body through the melatonin rhythm as a true night. The room becomes a paradox between the visible and the invisible, the visual and the physiological: a night which looks like a bright day.

Winter Beach is a project built mainly upon two factors:
A skyline of ultraviolets
This, on the one hand, is the installation of solar radiation, the rays we encounter at the seaside, on the beach in summer, which come to us from the sky, but which are also reflected on the water, and thus reach us on the beach as if in duplicate. This is why people tan quicker on the beach than in a city or in the countryside, where the sun’s radiation touching the ground is absorbed and not reflected as it is at sea or in the mountains, on snow. What we are reproducing here is an electromagnetic landscape, a skyline of ultraviolet, a certain quantity of UV-A present on the beach in summer, which we perceive here no longer as something visible, but in a cutaneous way, through a transformation of the skin, through the suntan, in midwinter. It is also this angle of incidence that is developed between the ground, the skyline and our body.

Iodized spindrift
Then there is a marine aerosol, a form derived from the sea’s spindrift or spray, a cloud of iodine produced within, which we pick up through breathing and which develops its real forms in the body itself. The space will be hot—around 28oC/82oF, a temperature at which clothes are no longer indispensable, and which occurs in summer at Saint-Nazaire. A bar will serve natural mineral water coming from Saxon, the aforementioned village in the Swiss mountains.

Our winter beach is as much a temporal shift between summer and winter as a shift of scale, from the macroscopic scale of an outdoor seaside landscape, complete with sun and sea, to the physiological microscopic scale indoors, complete with iodine and ultraviolet rays. It is a composition of elements whose meaning and use are open-ended and can be freely interpreted by people and groups alike, as shores have been down the ages, somewhere between rejection and desire. The winter beach is presented like a new form of indoor public place with atmospheres made of light, smell, heat and taste—an off-beat form, somewhere between the swimming pool and the exotic restaurant.

What would be a dream project for you ( that is if you still haven't done it)?
Now it is to build the Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster house. The project is based on the thermodynamic phenomena of the Gulf Stream, one of the most fascinating models for thinking architecture today because it gives a route to escape from the normalization and the homogenization of the modern space. This climatic phenomenon is created by the polarization in the space of two different thermal sources: one high cold source at one side and one low warm source at the other side. This thermal polarization in the space generates a convective movement of air, which defines different zones with different temperatures.

Modernity led to uniform, consistent spaces in which the temperature is regulated around 21 degrees. The aim here is to restore diversity to the relation that the body maintains with space, with its temperature, to allow seasonal movement within the house, migrations from downstairs to upstairs, from cold to warm, winter and summer, dressed and undressed. For people to feel comfortable in a heated room there must be equilibrium in the exchange of heat occurring via convection between their bodies and the surrounding air. This equilibrium is of course relative to clothing, from nudity in the bathroom, to the thermal protection of blankets, to light clothing worn in the living room. Today, confronted with the will to economize energy resources, the demand is to set up in each building, and even each room, a precisely calculated thermal capacity in order to expend only the energy that is strictly necessary.

Instead of warming all the space at the good temperature around 20°C, we propose to create in the house two sources of heat, like two different thermal poles creating a thermodynamic tension inside the all house: one pole is cold at 15 °C and situated in the upper layers of air of the house. The opposite pole is warm, at 22°C situated in the lower layers of the space. A movement of air will be generated by this difference of temperatures and positions in the space. With the help of thermal model software, we analyze the variation of temperature and his distribution in all the space and find then places for activities, according to specific temperatures. The project process is thus reversed: a indoor climate is first produced and after, functions are freely chosen anywhere in the space related to the thermal quality required depending of activities, clothes, personal desires. An ecologic and economic gain is obtained at the same time by creating in the whole house a low average of temperature at 18°C instead of the 20°C in a normal heating system.

The floors and the open spaces are therefore designed to follow the form taken by the air in the entire height of the building, in accordance with vertical air movements in relation to temperature, and the functions that are suggested as a result. Next, various functions take their places in an obvious manner on this stratification from the coldest to the warmest.

Two horizontal metal planes are extended at different heights. The lower plane is heated to 22°C, the upper one is cooled to 15°C. Like a miniature Gulf Stream, their position creates a movement of air using the natural phenomenon of convection, in which rising hot air cools on contact with the upper cool sheet and, falling, is then reheated on contact with the hot sheet, thus creating a constant thermal flow, akin to an invisible landscape. What interests us here is not the creation of homogeneous, established spaces, but of a plastic, climatic dynamic, the activation of forces and polarities that generate a landscape of heat. In this case the architecture is literally structured on a current of air, opening up a fluid, airy, atmospheric space. This architecture is based on the construction of meteorology. The shapes of the house will be cut out from the shapes of the thermal movement given by the thermal model. The inhabitant may move around in this invisible landscape between 15°C and 26°C, temperatures at the two extremities of the concept of comfort, and freely choose a climate according to his or her activity, clothing, dietary, sporting or social wishes.

Other architects work that you admire?
I admire architects who write theories, who invent new languages, and create new approaches to architecture and the way we think. Aldo Rossi, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, Le Corbusier for example. Its not that I agree with them, but I admire the way they modelise a thinking, and have reinvented the elements of architecture. In this moment, Diller and Scofidio of course in New York. The blur building they realized in Swizerland in 2002 is the most important building of this new century by turning wall and floor into fog and humidity, by creating atmosphere rather than space.

Most interesting cultural hot spot?
Venice in Italy with the biennale and Paris with the "force de l'Art 02", the new French triennale of contemporary art running currently in the incredible space of the Grand-Palais, I designed the museography of this exhibition showing beautiful work of talented artists like Boris Achour or Guillaume Leblon.

So here it is, 321 Contact "Architecture" mixed with Sébastien Tellier's Roche (Breakbot remix), for now music only, but a video should soon come too!

I remember this smart allegory (I don't know where from) to describe post-modern architecture : "A classic/traditional window is vertical, bescause that's the way you can make the biggest hole in a wall without having it collapse ; a modernist window is horizontal, so as to express the wall doesn't support anything anymore, and the hole can be placed anywhere you want and fit the landscape ; a post-modern window is squared, because it only defines itself as "different" from both classic and modern"... Interesting isn't it?

But how could we call this "trend" (what is it but a trend : it looks the same without functionning the same way in plan and scale?) of making black or white cubic buildings with randoms square windows? Very risky to even ask the question... Anyway I quite like all of these projects...

Je me souviens de cette brillante allégorie (je ne sais plus d'où) décrivant l'architecture post-moderne : "Une fenêtre classique/traditionnelle est verticale, car c'est le meilleur moyen de faire une ouverture dans un mur sans que celui-ci ne s'effrondre ; une fenêtre moderniste est horizontale, pour exprimer l'idée que le mur ne porte désormais plus rien, et que l'ouverture peut être placée n'importe où tout en s'étirant sur le paysage ; une fenêtre post-moderne est carrée, car elle se définit seulement en opposition à la moderniste et la classique"... Intéressant, n'est-ce pas?

Mais comment pourrait-on appeler cette "tendance" (de quoi s'agit-il sinon une tendance : ça se ressemble sans pour autant fonctionner de la même manière en plan ou en échelle?) de faire des bâtiments cubiques noirs ou blancs aux fenêtres carrées et aléatoires? Déjà très risqué de poser la question... Ceci dit j'aime assez tous les projets suivants...

SANAA - Zolleverein school of design - 2006

Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa are maybe the pionneer of this trend... The school of Zollverein is just one example (the best one maybe) of the simplicity, quality and roughness of a theme they've worked on for years. Notice the progressive distribution of windows, evidence of an interesting programmatic reflexion...

I've already talked about this interesting swedish practice with their Tree Hotel. In their very last project, Västra Kajen, you can notice the space left between the exterior façade and the interior one, similar to the system used by Pezo & Von Ellrichshausen with Casa Poli.

J'ai déjà évoqué cette intéressante agence suédoise avec leur Tree Hotel. Dans leur tout dernier projet, Västra Kajen, on peut observer l'espace libre laissé entre la façade extérieure et l'intérieur, similaire au système employé par Pezo & Von Ellrichshausen dans la Casa Poli.

ABOUT INERTIAL CONFINEMENT FUSION

Here are a few images of facilities I've been recently interested in. Inertial confinement fusion is the technology used to create and explore the physical phenomenon of nuclear fusion.

Using hundreds of focused lasers (hence the spheric shape of the structure), atoms of tritium and deuterium (modified hydrogen atoms) are squeezed one to another, under a huge pressure, forcing them to "melt" in one new type of atoms (helium).

The Laser megajoule is a french project, created in order to study the behaviour of fusion since the end of nuclear tests in Mururoa. It is the world most powerful laser machine along with the US one, the National Ignition Facility. (below images of both facilities). It reminds me of the incredible images of neutrino telescopes that I love...

Voici quelques images d'équipements auxquels je me suis récemment intéressés. La fusion par confinement interiel est la technologie utilisée pour créer et explorer le phénomène physique de la fusion nucléraire.

En concentrant des centaines de lasers en un point (d'où la forme spherique de la structure) des atomes de deuterium et de tritium (des atomes d'hydrogène modifiés) sont compimés les uns contre les autres, sous une pression énorme, les forçant à fusionner pour créer un nouveau type d'atomes (hélium).

Le Laser megajoule est un projet français créé dans le but d'étudier le comportement de la fusion depuis la clôture des essais nucléaires de Moruroa. C'est l'installation de laser la plus énergétique au monde avec son équivalent américain, le National Ignition Facility. (ci dessous des images des deux installations). Cela me rappelle mes images incroyables des téléscopes à neutrinos que j'aime tant...

The Z-machine is a slightly different structure, as it uses X-ray instead of laser, but the purpose of it is the same (studying nuclear reactions by concentrating energetic rays in one target).

La Z-machine est une structure légèrement différent, puisqu'elle utilise des rayons X à la place des lasers, mais son objectif est le même (l'étude de réactions nucléaires par concentration de rayons énergétiques vers une cible).

TWO BOXES... PUBLISHED

The latest issue (#48, may-june 2009) of french architecture magazine A Vivre has a very nice 10 pages article about the project "Two Boxes" I completed few monthes ago. Entitled "Boîtes de jour, boîtes de nuit" ("Night box, day box"), it is written by journalist Raphaëlle Saint-Pierre and additional photos are from Daniel Moulinet.

Thanks to Benoit Joly who liked the project and decided to publish it, and to my client who initially trusted in me.

Le dernier numéro (#48, mai-juin 2009) de la revue française d'architecture A Vivre consacre un sympathique article de 10 pages sur le projet "Two Boxes" que j'ai terminé quelques mois auparavant. Intitulé "Boîtes de jour, boîtes de nuit", il est écrit par la journaliste Raphaëlle Saint-Pierre et les photos additionelles sont de Daniel Moulinet.

Merci à Benoit Joly qui a apprécié le projet et a décidé de la publié, et à mon client qui m'a fait confiance à l'origine.

Pour construire un espace harmonieux, l’architecte trace des lignes de fuite qui prolongent le dessin de la verrière. « J’ai souhaité conserver cette trame qui était l’élément fort du lieu avant travaux. Ainsi, la hauteur de la mezzanine, de la bibliothèque, des meubles de cuisine, du joint creux sur le bloc salle de bains, est déterminée par les menuiseries horizontales. » De même, les compartiments du banc en bois qui court sous la verrière s’alignent sur ses menuiseries verticales. Synthétisant plusieurs fonctions (rangement, siège, table basse), ce banc permet à l’espace de rester dépouillé. L’architecte parvient à conserver le caractère industriel des lieux – béton au sol, poutres et poteaux apparents – tout en lui apportant une touche d’élégance, notamment grâce à une gamme de teintes sobres : blanc, gris, noir, taupe et couleur naturelle du bois. « J’ai cherché à créer une architecture à la fois simple, rigoureuse et poétique », résume-t-il.

EMILIO MARIN ARQUITECTO : ALTERNATIVE ARCHITECTURE

I've recently met chilean architect Emilio Marín, whom Emilie Faline luckilly worked with for a few weeks on a public plaza competition in Corral, south Chile.

The work of Emilio, mixing architecture with graphic design, contemporary art, fanzine editions, events and many other creative fields, leads to a very original corpus of productions that one could call an exciting alternative to the more academic post-modern Chilean architecture. Most of his non-architecture works are featured on the creative platform Public Library, co-founded with graphic designer Diego Cordova.

Elias Redstone, english curator, came to visit Emilio a few monthes ago as part of his "latin american emerging architecture tour". Emilio was consequently included in the Icon Magazine "20 world most inovative architects" shortlist, and ended 6th...

Emilio also organizes the creative international event Pecha Kucha Night in Santiago. The first one was held last month in Bellavista neighborhood.

J'ai récemment rencontré l'architecte chilien Emilio Marín, avec qui Emilie Faline a eu la chance de travailler pendant quelques semaines sur un concours de place publique à Corral, sud du Chili.

Le travail d'Emilio, mélangeant l'architecture avec le graphisme, l'art contemporain, l'édition de magazine, l'évenementiel et d'autres domaines créatifs, produit un corpus original d'oeuvres, que l'on pourrait qualifier d'excitante alternative à une architecture chilienne post-moderne plus académique. La plupart de ses travaux non-architecturaux apparaissent dans la plateforme créative Public Library, co-fondée avec le graphiste Diego Cordova.

UNIVERSIDAD AUSTRAL DE CHILE EN VALDIVIA

Here are some images of the project we realized in collaboration with architect Sebastian Irarrazaval and the team Murua+Valenzuela (Rodrigo Valenzuela & Benjamin Murua), for an architecture competition.

The project was about finding a solution for renovating a science building part of the Universidad Austral campus, in Valdivia, south Chile, partially destroyed in 2007 by a fire. Only the concrete structure remained.

Unfortunately for us, the winning project was the one of brothers Tidy Arquitectos, but ours still received a special mention.

G-CANS PROJECT

Ma fascination pour les lieux démesurés et mystérieux (comme les téléscopes à neutinos évoqués précédemment ou les observatoires astronomiques évoqués bientôt!) m'a fait tomber sur cet incroyable projet japonais, nommé G-Cans. Les images laissent imaginer un lieu destiné à abriter la population en cas d'attaque nucléaire ou à tester des engins militaires en toute discrétion... Et pourtant non, il s'agit tout simplement d'un réseau de citernes souterraines géantes, dont la fonction est d'empécher les importantes crues auxquelles est soumise régulièrement la ville de Saitama, en banlieue de Tokyo.
La taille du camion donne une bonne idée de l'échelle!

Commencé en 1992, le projet est constitué de 5 silos de béton de 65m de hauteur et 32m de diamètre, ainsi que d'un réservoir de 25m de haut, large de 78m et long de 177m...

Hélas il est difficile de trouver davantage d'informations sur internet, le site web de G-Cans étant entièrement en japonais...

D'une certaine manière, ces images m'évoquent la scéne finale d'Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark), dans l'entrepôt secret et gigantesque dont on ne peut même pas distinguer la fin...

TREE HOTEL - THAM & VIDEGARD HANSSON

"Harads" est le dernier projet des architectes suédois Bolle Tham et Martin Videgård Hansson. Il s'agit d'un hôtel - ou plutôt d'une chambre - perchée dans les arbres. De l'extérieur, le lieu est un cube entièrement en miroir, reflètant la forêt environnante... Je trouve que les deux images proposées sont très belles...

LES INSTALLATIONS DE RENATA HAR

Voici quelques photos de la dernière exposition, le 5 décembre 2008, de mon amie Renata Har, en dernière année à l'Ecole de Beaux Arts de Paris.

Dans la plupart de ses oeuvres, Renata explore l'idée de souvenir, de trace d'un moment vécu.
Ses installations de confettis évoquent un lendemain de fête, un sol balayé où les indices de l'événement passé sont discrètement entassés dans un coin.

Les deux installations vidéos figurent des lieux publics non-identifiés (un ciel et une rue pavée), dont on entend uniquement le son, des bruits joyeux mais qui semblent lointains. La mise en scène du dispositif (une sacoche et une malle) semble aussi faire écho au souvenir d'un voyage révolu.

TERRE NATALE

Jusqu'au 15 mars se tient Terre Natale, une formidable exposition à la Fondation Cartier, boulevard Raspail à Paris. Créée par le philosophe Paul Virilio et le photographe Raymond Depardon, Terre Natale développe une réflexion qui m'a parue assez intéressante sur les notions d'origine, de migration, d'identité.
Le texte de l'exposition cite Virilio :
« Avec Raymond Depardon, on se retrouvait sur la même question : que reste-t-il du monde, de la terre natale, de l´histoire de la seule planète habitable aujourd´hui ? »

Dans la première salle est projeté un film documentaire de R. Depardon, intitulé Donner la parole, composé de courtes séquences dans lesquelles quelques individus du monde entier racontent dans leur langue natale leur identité, leur rapport à la terre et leurs inquiétudes quant à l'avenir de leur peuple. Le film présenté dans la deuxième salle, Le tour du monde en 14 jours, commence déjà à méler le regard dramatique et dynamique de Virilio à l'objectivité humaniste de Depardon par le décalage entre ces séquences de villes autour du monde capté dans un laps de temps ridiculement court...

Bien que je trouve le travail de Raymond Depardon absolument passionnant et juste, il me semble que sa confrontation avec l'approche de Paul Virilio (qui est aussi urbaniste, ancien associé de Claude Parent, et théoricien de la vitesse, des déplacements, des accidents) crée une mise en perspective tout à fait intéressante. L'aspect conceptuel, généraliste et un brin catastrophiste des idées de Virilio complète bien le regard documentaire, sincère, de Derpardon... c'est un peu deux visions d'un même monde, théorique et empirique, qui se croisent ici.

Puis c'est dans le sous-sol de la Fondation Cartier que se poursuit la deuxième partie de l'exposition, intitulée Ailleurs commence ici, avec notamment deux installations passionnantes créée par les new-yorkais Diller & Scofidio.

Elizabeth Diller et Ricardo Scofidio sont des architectes dont le travail me fascine, ce sont entre autres les auteurs de l'incroyable Blur Building pour l'EXPO 02 en Suisse et de diverses installations interactives. Diller & Scofidio - Blur Building

Sous la direction de Paul Virilio, ils créent ici une oeuvre vidéo composée d'une trentaine d'écran suspendus au plafond, projettant un montage d'image d'archive traitant des migrations climatiques de populations. L'installation exploite habilement le positionnement des écrans, en hauteur et en perspective... La multitude des sources, comme autant de pixels indépendants ou partie d'un tout fait parfaitement écho aux propos de Virilio quant aux mouvements de masse que sont les migrations.

Enfin la seconde installation des new-yorkais, en collaboration avec différents graphistes, statisticiens, designers sonores, est une projection vidéo dans une rotonde figurant ces migrations et autres mouvements. LA GROSSE RENOVATION (4)

Après quelques mois de retard, malgré des soucis techniques et autres, voici enfin l'appartement de Victor (quasiment) terminé... Il s'agit d'un studio de 40m² dans un ancien atelier d'artiste (lui même dans une ancienne imprimerie), à Barbès.

Il a fallu véritablement tout créer ici, tout en essayant de garder un peu l'esprit brut du lieu. Dans le but de conserver un espace totalement ouvert, nous avons choisi d'intégrer certaines fonctions (salle de bain, chambre, rangements) dans deux "cubes" blancs, bien distincts du volume général (voir l'image 3D dans ce précédent post).

Le sol est en béton ciré, gris foncé, rappelant l'ancien béton brut de l'atelier.

Afin de structurer l'espace salon/cuisine, d'apporter un élément plus doux et chaud ainsi que de dissimuler les radiateurs filants sous la verrière, nous avons créé un grand banc en contre-plaqué ciré, simple et fonctionnel...Partant de la cuisine, le banc le déploie sur 8 mètres jusqu'à l'autre bout de l'appartement, avec un rythme identique à celui de la verrière. Dans le prolongement de celle-ci vient se greffer la bibliothèque...

La cuisine, accolée au bloc salle de bain, est intégrée au maximum (réfrigérateur et lave-vaisselle en partie basse) afin de conserver l'espace libre. Le plan de travail est traité dans le même béton ciré que le sol.

Ci-dessus le bloc salle de bain vu de l'extérieur... ci dessous, l'intérieur de la salle de bain, traité dans des tons sable. Le calepinage est ici primordial, déterminé d'une part par les équipements (lave-linge, toilettes, douche, etc.) d'autre part par le format du gré-cérame 5x5 cm.Le bloc "chambre" (mezzanine + dressing) est divisé en deux niveaux. Par la droite on accède à la mezzanine par un étroit escalier. Pour accéder au dressing, la façade du bloc se déplace vers la droite en obstruant l'escalier, dégageant une entrée sur la gauche. Dans la mezzanine, des stores motorisés opaques descendent du bandeau de plafond pour obscurcir l'espace... Un variateur permet de controler la lumière légèrement diffuse de la mezzanine. L'animation qui suit montre les différentes configurations possibles...

Le dressing est un lieu étrange, sur-éclairé et isolé par un revêtement aluminium conférent à la pièce une ambiance abstraite et spatiale! Le caisson noir sur la droite est destiné à accueillir un vidéo-projecteur (l'orifice de projection trapézoïdal est visible dans la façade du dressing)...

FILIP DUJARDIN ET SES PHOTOGRAPHIES IMPOSSIBLES

J'ai découvert récemment le travail de Filip Dujardin, d'abord sur le blog BLDGBLOG puis dans la revue Mark. Je trouve ce travail réellement fascinant dans sa fusion décomplexée de deux tendances de la photographie : banalité et neutralité (à l'instar de l'Académie d'Art de Düsseldorf avec les Becher) d'un côté, et mise en scène par retouche numérique de l'autre. En effet, ces incroyables images d'architecture sont des montages, réalisés à partir de morceaux de villes, de murs, de paysage récoltés patiemment par le photographe belge autour de son atelier. Des lieux improbables et si réalistes qui tour à tour inquiètent ou fascinent...

DE L'UTILITE D'UN VIDEOPROJECTEUR

Je suis fasciné par l'emploi que font certains collectifs de graphistes, designers et autres scénographe d'une machine toute simple (le déscendant direct de nos bons vieux projecteurs de diapositives) et qui de plus devient de nos jours assez abordable : le vidéo-projecteur...
L'idée intéressante qui se propage peu à peu est de lier davantage l'image au support de projection (alors que l'écran blanc était de rigueur jusqu'alors)... Autrement dit faire correspondre le contenant et le contenu...

Le collectif AntiVJ (ci dessous) propose des sculptures lumineuses aux formes géométriques auxquelles le vidéo-projecteur, précisément positionné pour contrôler l'anamorphose induite, fait correspondre des animations abstraites...

Ci dessous, et dans un même esprit, c'est l'artiste espagnol Pablo Valbuena.

Et enfin une vidéo d'un live du musicien Etienne de Crécy, dont la scénographie a été réalisée par le collectif d'architectes et designer Exyzt (à qui l'on doit notamment le Social Club à Paris, ou le pavillon français de la 10e biennale de Venise - 2006 avec Patrick Bouchain).

Il faut savoir que l'installation ci dessus a été honteusement copiée par MTV pour une scénographie du groupe The Killers, le collectif Exyzt étant actuellement en procés avec la chaîne musicale...

FIGURATIONS PICTURALES DE L'HYPERCUBE

Mon ami Valentin Faline, étudiant aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, a récemment exposé ses dernières oeuvres dans la galerie de l'école. Le thème de cette série est la représentation d'hypercubes, autrement appelés tesseracts, qui sont l'équivalent des cubes tridimensionnels mais en quatre dimensions. La figuration en trois dimensions de tels volumes étant déjà une gymnastique délicate pour notre cerveau (voir cette vidéo, en illustrant la projection en 3D), c'est avec l'abstraction mesurée du peintre que ces Tesseracts sont ici évoqués. Les notions même de perspective classique, de représentation sont naturellement remises en question par le sujet. J'aime beaucoup le jeu avec le cadre, la composition ainsi que la scénographie de l'accrochage...

NEW ACEH - LA RECONSTRUCTION POST-TSUNAMI

Mes amis architectes Eléonore Labattut et Simon Déprez sont parti voilà quelques semaines en Indonésie, plus précisément en Aceh, région particulièrement touchée par le tsunami de 2004... Leur projet sur place, appuyé par différentes ONG, est des plus passionnants : dresser un bilan de la reconstruction des villages détruits 4 ans après la catastrophe, d'un point de vue à la fois humain et architectural, technique et sociologique...

FILM DIRECTOR'S HOME (4/4)

C'est avec plusieurs mois de retard sur la fin du chantier que je poste ces quelques photos de l'appartement du réalisateur Wes Anderson (The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums, etc.), dont j'ai réalisé les travaux de rénovation de janvier à juillet...

L'appartement, de 190 m², est situé dans le VIe arrondissement de Paris. Pour ce qui est du style, c'est naturellement Wes Anderson qui a tout choisi, conférant à chaque pièce un univers proche de ses films...

Les chambres et leur couloir avec une moquette arlequin... pour les murs c'est une tenture Kvadrat à chevron beige.

Nous avons créé une nouvelle salle de bain, attenante à la chambre principale...
...avec bien sûr un grand hamam.Comme pour le reste de l'appartement, nous avons dans le salon retapissé tous les meubles existants (tapissier d'ameublement : Clémentine Messié), changé la moquette pour un motif de lierre vert, et repeint les murs. (photo ci-dessus : Simon Déprez)

Le choix des couleurs est très personnel, mais crée une atmosphère vraiment surprenante qui reflette la personnalité du client...

Enfin à gauche le bureau principal, où les nombreux livres de l'ancien propriétaire trouvent leur place sans difficulté. A droite la chambre/dressing, dont le style plus froid tranche avec le reste de l'appartement.

DU SOLEIL DANS LA NUIT

Il y a quelques temps j'ai réalisé plusieurs images pour le compte de l'artiste Laurent Grasso (galerie Chez Valentin - Paris), frère de l'architecte Pascal Grasso avec qui j'avais déjà travaillé, et nomminé au prix Marcel Duchamp 2008.
La première collaboration fut à l'occasion de la Nuit Blanche 2006, pour un projet intitulé "Du soleil dans la nuit". Il s'agissait d'une installation de ballons lumineux sur un terrain de sport dans le 18e arrondissement. (commissaires Nicolas Bourriaud et Jérôme Sans)

En 2007, nous avons travaillé sur des représentations pour des maquettes possibles des projets militaires HAARP (modification du climat par ondes électro-magnétiques), puis Echelon (système global de surveillance des radio-télécommunications).
Ces deux projets ont donné lieu à plusieurs oeuvres dans le cadre de l'exposition "Time Dust", en mars 2008 à la galerie Chez Valentin.
Enfin, j'ai réalisé une image (ci-dessous) en très grand format destinée à illustrer le projet "Infinite Light", au Hunter College à New York, USA, en septembre 2008.

DES MUONS CHEZ LES MAYAS

Décidemment, il semblerait que les méthodes de détection de particules - et des muons en particulier - soient un véritable stimulant de la réflexion architecturale : le très bon blog BldgBlog a publié il y a quelques jours un superbe article sur le projet Maya Muon Tomography, lancé par le University of Texas Maya Muon Group.

En résumé, il a pour objectif de dresser une cartographie en trois dimensions (ou tomographie) de l'intérieur des pyramides maya, un peu à la manière d'un IRM médical, mais en utilisant des détecteurs de muons, ces particules élémentaires notamment émises par la rencontre d'un neutrino et du noyau d'un atome...

Là où l'archéologie rencontre la physique nuclaire...

Ceci dit l'article de BldgBlog est très détaillé, et s'étend même au delà du sujet avec quelques digressions pertinentes.

PLAYING THE BUILDING (WITH DAVID BYRNE)

Il y a quelques jours s'est cloturée une installation passionnante conçue par David Byrne, l'ex-leader d'un de mes groupes fétiches, les Talking Heads.

Il s'agissait d'investir les 900 m² d'une ancienne usine (le Battery Maritime Building), située dans Lower Manhattan, NYC, et de transformer le bâtiment en entier en oeuvre interactive, en instrument géant pour musique concrète...

Et d'ailleurs concrètement, David Byrne utilise un vieil orgue électrique qu'il relie à toute une série de dispositifs "vibrants" ou "frappants" accrochés à telle ou telle partie du lieu... poutres métalliques, colonnes, radiateurs, tuyaux de ventillation, sol, cloisons, gaines en tout genre...

Ces deux vidéos extraites du site de David Byrne sont assez parlantes...

Des musiciens et artistes étaient donc invités tout l'été à venir improviser sur l'orgue, à "jouer du bâtiment" en faisant vibrer toute la structure.

LA TECTONIQUE DES PLAQUES

Chez Victor, la pose du béton ciré se fait attendre... La cause : on s'est rendu compte que le support (une chape de bien piètre facture qui n'accroche pas sur la dalle en béton armé) sous le raggréage que l'on vient de poser était vraiment de mauvaise qualité. Solution? tout casser...

Le sol sonne creux, et quand on tape plus fort les plaques se détachent par morceaux entiers...
